I have not been here for awhile,,but always like to check back in often always looking for somebody from Schweinfurt, Ledward Barracks 71-74.
I was in Charlie 2/30th and somebody posted "no talk about drug use "
The words to Alices Restaurant come to mind --You can get anything you want at...........Charlie 2/30th! Some do not like to talk about it or hear about it - especially C&P examiners---last rating decision said " his barracks life sounded like "normal" military or male locker room atmoshpere. I don't think he ever attended a short timers party!....Germany in the field was awesome, Reforger was great, ALERTS - well thats another story unless you were heading to Wildflicken or Hohenfelds or the infamous GRAF - but when we sat in Motor Pool area for hours it was....well I guess you had to be there and I have always wanted to go back and visit again someday

My father was stationed in Bremhaven in 1950. We all joined him there. I have several pictures from the base. He worked in the hospital and I had surgery there at the age of 7. I have wonderful memories of that time, because it was the last time I lived with my dad.

I was stationed in Northwestern Germany at Teveren Fliegerhorst in 1971-72 with the Pershing Missile 85th Artillery Detachment. We were the U.S. Army Nuclear Warhead Detachment supporting the German Pershing Nuclear Missile Unit Flugkorpergeschwader 2, (2nd Surface to Surface Missile Wing). We, the 85th Arty. Det., had total control of the Nuclear Warheads which the German Military was not allowed to have. I have yet to find any information at all about the 85th during the early 70's. On an internet search I did find 3 photographs posted by Dean Rectenwald (who I do not know) of the 2 Barracks Buildings and the HQ Building that the 85th was housed in. It appears that those photos might have been taken when the 85th was pulled out. Buildings appear to possibly be vacant. We were like a "******* Child" Unit of 150 U.S.Army Soldiers out in the middle of nowhere. Teveren Fliegerhorst, Also known in later years as Geilkirchen Air Base, had the longest runway of any of the German Air Force bases during WWII.

I have many fond memories of my time in Europe and i am thankful that I had the opportunity to expierence all that it had to offer. Pirmasens is closed and most of it demolished and new buildings built. Hanua is closed and turned back to the Germans. Kaiserslautern is still there, but much of the facilities are now located on Ramstein. If you have any questions, please fell free to contact me. Tim

My mother told me he was from California and I know he was in Vietnam too... My name is Susanne, I was born 1968 in germany, my mother was living in Schmachtenberg near Mönchberg and her name is Christa. Is here anyone who was the same time at the base, perhaps know him? Can someone help me?
Thanks for your time and

I was at Nellengin air field from 1959 to 1961, got an early out in 1961
after 24 mos. in germany. I was a helicopter mechanic for Headquarters
co. 168th Engr. Bat. Was on operation Wintershield and spent more than
half my time in field. Our helicopter was a small recon helicopter and
Capt. John Olmstead was our pilot. When we went into the field I drove
a gas tanker with aviation gas on board, 1600 gal. I lost my brakes once
going down Java junction ( about a 10 mile stretch on a good road down
a mountain ). We were going to our forward position when Russia gave
us 6 mos. or less to get out of Berlin. My air tanks ran out of air from
braking so much going down the mountain plus I found out I had a small
leak in the air line. I was going so fast that the speedometer was past
65 and around 0 again. In 5th gear I couldn't keep it in gear anymore so
I raced the engine with the clutch in and built up the air pressure so I
could start braking again. I was always the last truck in the convoy because of the aviation gas, so going up java junction I had to use low low gear and the rest of the convoy got way ahead, by miles. So going down was almost coasting and gaining speed. The truck that was ahead
of me was carrying troops and a trailer with ammo on board. As
I was trying to slow down I could see the truck and trailer comming up
as I drove around the curves. Finally the pressure started coming up,
20lbs, 30lbs and I started to brake. God was with me that day because
it worked and I slowed down, up to about 20 feet from the trailer ahead
of me. As you can tell, I still talk about it. I spent a lot of time in Sttugart,
and had a girl in Ludwigsburg. Spent a lot of time in tbe Gausthouse
Italia in town. I had a lot of fun in Germany. Fights would break out at
the gausthouse and when I tried to help the other guys would push me
down in a chair and say, " wait till we're done " because I only weighed
about 120 lbs then and they would't let me fight. I still had a lot of fun!!

I commanded the 7th Engineer Brigade, was the VII Corps Engineer, and the Commander of the Ludwigsburg Community, from June 1980 to June 1983, the longest period of any Brigade Commander. (The Command tour had been extended to 3 years and was later cut back.) The Brigade had the motto of "Engineers - Lead the Way" and had a very high morale. Besides the training exercises described in the history of the Brigade, we participated in a Reforger exercise in which we were augmented by a Reserve Engineer Command from the United States. For this exercise, using metal pallets, we built an airstrip in which the planes from the States landed. We also built refueling points for the planes and helicopters carried by them. The reinforcing units were processed, they were equipped with materiel taken out of POMCUS sites, and went on to participate in a major USAREUR wide FTX. While I was with VII Corps, the 7th Engineer Brigade built many German Community projects, and also several projects to improve the many Kasernes occupied by VII Corps units. The Brigade units participated in many activities with German Army units with which they established partnership relationships. We participated in many visits to German Army installations, and they took our officers to visit old Roman forts. It was an enjoyable and satishying tour. Not mentioned in the history of the Brigade, is that later it deployed to Saudi Arabia and participated in the Gulf War and invasion of Iraq.

I posted a message here a long time ago. I showed up in Southern Germany Jan. 1, 1957. Location: A small town named Fussen near Austria & not far from Garmish. I was an instructor at an ordnance school. In about 9 momths being Sept. 1957 they decided to merge the school with the Engineer School located at Murnau. I was relocated and
was an instructor at what was known as the USAREUR ENGINEER ORDNANCE SCHOOL. I left Germany in May 1959 to come back to the U.S.A. Went to the worlds fair in Brussels Belgieum in 1958 plus many other places.

I'm in touch with a number of other guys who were also instructors over there. We have been having reunions the past few years & have plans to take a trip back to Germany in Sept. 2011

If you know about the Usareur schools or maybe had even been there please contact me. Thanks,
Ed Jones

I am writing you on behalf of a friend here in Silkeborg, Denmark.
My friends name is Norbert Oskar Andersen and he is a result of a meeting between a german woman and a black American soldier, who met in Germany around 1957.
Norbert went to a children s home in Schweinfurt and was later adopted to a family in Denmark.
Norberts mother is now deceased, but Norbert succeeded in getting a contact to her before she died.
But unfortunately he got no information about his father.
He is now longing very much for information about him.
Norberts papers says father unknown, so all we know is:
His father was a black soldier.
His mother was working as a charwoman on Ledward Barrack, Schweinfurt.
Her name was Marianna Lutter.
From the birth date of Norbert ( 17. November 1957 ) we know that they must have met in February 1957.
Norbert has tried to contact the adoptions authorities in Germany, but without any luck.
Not much information, but do you think you could help us in any way?
Can we find photos of the soldiers in 1957 on the internet?
Can I find out which unit the father could be in?
We will thank you for any response.
Many regards
Vagn Pedersen

Can anyone help locate a Lawrence (Larry) Steinberg who I believe was stationed in/near Leipheim Germany approx. 1955 through May 1957. He was about 25 years old and a Lieutenant when he left Germany in 1957. I have a photo of him and another serviceman - unfortunately there is no identification which would tell which unit he was with. My father was stationed in Leipheim during that time with the 61st Armor/9th Inf Div (?), but does not remember where Lt Steinberg was from.
Any information would be very helpful; perhaps there is a family member who would like this photo. Thank you in advance!

I am living in Iffeldorf, Bavaria in Germany. Doing researches for a documentation I am trying to find Veterans, who were involved in the liberation of a death train with survivors from the concentration camp Dachau. This train was liberated in Staltach by US Soldiers on April 30, 1945. Staltach (today's name Iffeldorf) is south of Munich and east of the Lech River.
Can anyone help me with the mission of finding testimonies of soldiers who were there?
If anyone from the American soldiers, has taken any pictures from the liberation or the time after in Iffeldorf, when taking care of the surviors there, it will help me a lot.
thanks
Hans

Yes -- no doubt -more than I have room for. First, it's a great pleasure to have the chance to connect with old buddies, colleagues. I served at brigade headquarters at Harvey Barracks, Kitzingen, in 1963-64 as the brigade's enlisted public information specialist. For most of that time, the brigade commander was Col. (eventually Lt. Gen.) Harris W. Hollis. Some other officers then were Lt. Col. Leo Dupont, Lt. Col. Paul Mueller, Maj. William G. Carter, Maj. Roberts (the S2), Capt. (later Maj.) Patrick H. Taylor, Maj. Roy Ingram, Maj. Ray Palmiter, Capt. Nelson O. Newcombe, Capt. Richard Dudek, 1st Lt. then Capt. George W. Brandt, Capt. Collins (the aviation officer), Capt. Samuel King, Capt. then Maj. Burleigh A. Hobson, Capt James McLeod, Capt. William Robinson, Lt. Edward Buelow, and others. For names omitted or misspelled, my deep apologies -- after awhile, the memory atrophies! Sp4 Ed Botkin, the company clerk and then Catholic chaplain's assistant, died four years ago (in September 2006) in Iowa of a heart attack, where he'd served as a parish priest and a professor of biblical languages and theology at St. Ambrose University. I've lost touch with other enlisted men from that time and would be happy to hear from any of them reading this site. I separated from active duty in December 1964 after three years, and for those of us who left the Army around then, our timing was fortuitous or at least relatively safe. (I entered service in December 1961, just after the Berlin crisis eased somwhat, and exited at the end of '64, just before the Indochina buildup.) I've fairly often thought of the professionals in our midst and wondered if all, or how many of them, emerged safely from the Vietnam War. Any comments, reminiscences, arguments appreciated. -- Joel Simons, Sp4, RA12 642 676
