Arrived Baumholder April 1960 and assigned to the 3rd Gun battaion 81st Artillery B company.
My wife & I lived in a small town nearby named Fohren Linden.
The unit deactivated in July and I was reassigned to Gibbs Barracks in Frankfurt to the 69th Engineer (TOPO) Company.
A major was the CO but the TO&E only called for a capt. The major left and Capt. Meyers became the new CO.
There was an SFC Kennedy, Spec 5 Stafford and others whose names escape me. Stafford and I worked together in the motor pool along with another Spec 5. Can't remember his name but was a great guy.
The company had a good fast pitch softball team. The pitcher was from a semi-pro team from Oakland CA. One of the guys was called Animal.
I arrived a Spec 4 and left a Spec 5. Great memories. Should have stayed in the Army.
My wife & I lived in town in a high rise apt. The landlady was from New York. Her name was Launsberry. A really nice lady. The apartment was just above a bar called the La Paloma. Friday & Saturday nites would find at least one GI getting tossed out for fighting.
My son was born at the 97th General Hospital. The nice thing was that the doctor who cared for my wife had an office across the hall from us.
I left Germany in July 61.

I am looking for any remaining members of my grandpa's unit. He was in the Rome-Arno Campaign GO 33 WD 1945, the Company B 16th Armed Engineers Bn. He enlisted Oct 01, 1942. He stepped on a land mine in Northern Africa in November, 1944. He was honorably discharged on December 14, 1945. His name is Herman Jacob Schook and he lived in Louisville, Kentucky. I don't know much about his service because all of the records burned in St Louis. If you were a member of this unit or a relative of a member, please contact me.
Thank you and God Bless-

Under "USA Equipment Maintenance Group" history there is an error. The 517th Ordance Co is really the 547th Ordnance Co which supported transportation units at the Waldau Kaserne and civilian vehicle maintenance section on Rothwesten Kaserne where the company barracks and headquarters were stationed. Kassel is the large city next to both Waldau and Rothwesten

I served with the 42nd Ordinance Company 85th Batallion, 7th Army located on Pioneer Kasern, Wolfgang (Hanau) Germany 1960-1962.
I was in the 3rd DS platoon. I was a 5 ton wrecker operator and we were mostly on the road as a direct support unit assisting other units in the area.
I have made contact with one person through this web site and was able to get him in touch with a person in his platoon he had asked about.
I married a German girl and we are still together (48 yrs.)
Recently retired after 30 plus years with a city municipality and still reside on the west coast.
My wife and I have returned numerous times to Germany and have been back on Pioneer and some of the other Kaserns in the area. Hope to be returning again soon.
Would like to hear from any of you that were there with the 42nd. during the same time frame.

Nurnberg was a great community and brings back great memories of the Soldiers I served with. Was on the Boeslagger Team. Returned to Wurzburg in 2005 and served with the 1st INF DIV (Deputy Division Chemical Officer) and finished up my Army Career commanding USAREUR's Emergency Management Assessment Team (EMAT) in Heidleberg. Thanks to all I served with for the wonderful experience and times. God Bless America!

I was assigned to 66th Aviation Co. while they were assigned at Bonamas airfield living in Frankfurt. Those were great times in Frankfurt. I was sent with Allen Lee to Hanau TDY with our aircraft prior to the company move to Hanau. Allen and I both volunteered for Vietnam shortly after the company made the move. Once you have been TDY, having the company come back with inspections and all that army crap it was hard. Allen and I had it made while TDY. Of course Vietnam wasn't a cake walk. I really enjoyed my time in the 66th and Germany, great group of guys in the company.

I served with 1st Battalion, 83rd Field Artillery, in Baumholder from Dec 75 thru Dec 78. Our unit was assigned to the 8th Infantry Division. We spent alot of time in the fields, at Baumholder, Graf, Hohenfels, and several manuevers thruout the countryside. Christmas time in Germany was great! I love the food, and of course, the beer. Our unit would run everyday, snow, ice, or sunshine. Many great memories with neighbors at housing area. I partied with alot of tankers. We would barbeque in the middle of winter. Had a party, BBQ with about 4 feet of snow on ground and the balcony. Shared alot of music with friends, cassettes, reel to reel tapes. I have been converting old great music to cds with my computer. Ha, even old 8-track tapes! To the soldiers of 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry Division, hats off to you guys. It was great being attached to your unit, Alpha Company, during FTX's, manuevers, etc. May God continue to bless our service personnel throughout the world. If one could only travel back in time, and cherrish fellow service personnel and the old kasernes, which have sadly perished. Great memories in my heart, mind, and soul of Germany and the soldiers, I had the honor of service with in defense of our great Country.

Assigned to STB VII Corps from 88-92. Worked in the SGS office in VII Corps HQ as a simple Admin Specialist. Nice but often hectic job, then got deployed to the 1st Gulf War still serving in the Admin slot. Got so busy we even forgot what day it was. Many fond memories of my time serving with VII Corps in the SGS office. I often got lucky to meet some interesting people - Tom Clancy (He co-wrote a book with LTG Franks), Manfred Rommel, and even met the German Chancellor "Helmut Kohl" and spilled coffee on his shoe! Much to the displeasure of our Protocol officer.

Robert E. Winn, and PLT Sgt was Melvin Summers..Made PFC and SP4 here, and then after one year was PCS to Ft Bragg, and assigned to tthe USATraning Center , as they were building such then at Bragg. Like to hear from anyone from that period with the old unit, also trying to find several old unit crest, such as the ones from the 6QM Gp, 8th Maint Bn, and 2nd Support Bde, all within Hanau area.
