US to Pull 35,000 Men Out of Germany in 1968
On May 1, 1967, the State Department announced that the US would redeploy 35,000 military personnel (28,000 Army and 7,000 Air Force) from Germany back to the United States. The withdrawal would begin in January 1968 and be concluded by mid-1968.
The redeployment of two of the three brigades of the 24th Infantry Division (about 10,000 men) and the entire 3rd ACR to the US received most of the media coverage in that period. But there were numerous other units including many smaller, non-divisional combat support and combat service support units that were also to be included in the
withdrawal. A complete list of these units appeared in the STARS & STRIPES in their Dec 31, 1967 issue. |

COMMENTS
(1) One battalion of the 10th SF Gp remained at Bad Toelz.
(2) One brigade remained at Augsburg; would later become 24th Inf Div (Forward)
(3) I believe 4th How Bn is a typo - according to the STATION LIST there was no 4-37th Arty in Germany at this time.
(4) The 106th Trans Bn was never redeployed to the US - maybe planning changed after the Dec 31 article. I will do some further research and see if another unit took its place as part of REFORGER. The 77th and 78th Trans Co were also not redeployed.
