Property List for Salzburg Area

Properties used by USFA in L.S.A.C., Nov 1948
On 21 June 1947, USFA signed an agreement with the Federal Government of Austria that became known as the "Pay-As-You-Go Plan."

In accordance with this agreement, the US Forces were obligated to pay rental rates for all properties leased by the command with values for the same or similar properties in effect on 1 June 1947. USFA paid rent for all real and personal properties used or occupied by USFA based on a detailed lease agreement that enumerated all component charges making up the total basic rent.

Exceptions to the above agreement where USFA payed only for utilities and such services as may be necessary (so, no rent), were
Austrian State Owned properties
Ex-Wehrmacht or other Enemy War installations
German external assets

Effective 1 July, rentals, facilities, goods, services and schillings (Austrian currency) procured by US Occupational Forces in Austria were paid with US dollar funds.

Webmaster note: Please contact me if you have information on which units or USFA activities used any of the properties listed in the documents on the left. I have a higher resolution scan of the pages if needed.

Do you have any history on Camp Truscott?

I had occasion to spend the night there in the Transient Barracks in February of 1951. We were bring some vehicles back to Tulln AB from Erding Air Depot just north of Munich. I recall when the billeting clerk issued us linen and blankets; mentioning he hoped we didn't mind sleeping with a bunch of soldiers that were on their way back to the States, having been convicted of all kinds of crimes. We were tired so we did. Nothing happened.

Next morning after breakfast I went to the Dispensary to have some stitches removed from above my right eye. Before leaving Tulln AB, the medics told me to be sure to have them removed on that particular day. The Army Medics obliged and were very cordial.

Seems like Truscott was way up on a hill?

Mirabell Service Club, Schwarzstrasse, Salzburg
(Source: USFA Sentinel, August 12, 1955)
A last-minute edict by Lt Gen William H. Arnold, USFA CG, has moved back the closing date of the Mirabell Service Club here to August 15. Date announced last week by special services was the 10th.

The Tonkino theater, also previously scheduled to close August 10, will remain in operation until September 25.

It is expected that all other facilities of the Mirabell will continue to function there until its closing date, then switch to Roeder. Recreational units there will operate until R-plus-60.

Mirabell director Miss Charlotte F. Townsend stated that the club will feature a "Farewell At Last" party on closing night, with dancing and refreshments.

The Mirabell club, in scope the largest operated by USFA Special Services, has been in operation since November, 1947, before which time it had been a Red Cross club. Four American girls are in charge, with a host of local civilian assistants.

In function similar to a community center, the Mirabell services more than 1,000 USFA personnel daily. Its facilities include an exceedingly well-stocked library, photo lab, schilling exchange, tour-ticket-reservation section, Red Cross desk (now at Roeder), overseas telephone and cable service, information and service desk.

Also classes in language, arts, dancing, music and sports, as well as continuing programs of parties, organized charity donations and church services.

Miss Townsend opines that the club has contributed largely to Austro-American relations in the area through its many functions which include Austrians as well as military guests.

Two recent jazz concerts held at the Mirabell - the Austro-American session in mid-July and the smaller joint effort one week later - offered solid proof that the local citizens follow the club's programs faithfully: at both concerts at least half the audience were Austrians.

(Source: STARS & STRIPES, June 21, 1952)
An article on official money-exchange facilities in Salzburg where soldiers could exchange military scrip for schillings, mentions the Oesterreichischer Hof Hotel on Schwarzstrasse near the Mirabell Service Club as one of the official exchange agents. This leads me to believe that the hotel was probably run by the US Army as a hotel or as transient quarters.

Does anybody have details or photos?

Displaced Person Camps
(Source: Email from Rodo Sofranac)
Thank you for this Web site.

My family lived in Salzburg for four years (1952-56), as Yugoslavian refugees. For awhile we lived in Lager Parsch, one of the many refugee camps in Austria. Because of that, we also had the "privilege" of living around US military families. This gave us first-hand experience with the graciousness and generosity of Americans. When it was our turn to leave the camp, we were overjoyed to learn of our sponsorship to the USA. I have been here almost 50 years, now -- what a blessing.

Thanks to all the USFA vets and their families for that wonderful introduction to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Special thanks to the Hawkridge and Patterson families.

I attached a story I recently wrote that you are welcome to share with members of your association.
