Area Command - Organizational Chart, late 1954 (DRAFT)
1954
Source: The organizational chart of Area Command, 1954, was compiled based on information gathered from various issues of the USFA Sentinel from the years 1954-1955. (The issues were graciously loaned to me by Ed Salzman who was on the Sentinal staff, 1954-1955.) I make no claim that the chart is complete, but have made a serious effort to be as accurate as possible.

Any additional information that can help in completing this organizational chart or help in compiling other charts for Area Command or Zone Command, Austria during the 1950s, would be most welcome and deeply appreciated!

Tactical, Area Cmds To Fold Today

Brig Gen Hoy Named USFA Deputy CG
USFA's Tactical and Area Cmds will be discontinued today, and USFA Hq will assume responsibility for the activities of these commands. Appropriate final retreat parades and retirement-of0colors ceremonies will be held at Camp Roeder for Tac Cmd and at Camp Riedenburg for Area Cmd. The proceedings at Riedenburg will commence at 9 am. Col Fredric C. Cook, CO, will deliver an address. Following the ceremonies, a reception will be held at the Österreichischer Hof. Tac Cmd proceedings will begin at 4:15. Following retirement of the colors, Brig Gen Charles E. Hoy, Tac Cmd CG, will address the troops.

Invitations Extended
Invitations to the Area and Tac Cmds final retreats were sent out to high-ranking USFA officers, State Department officials and Austrian dignitaries. Informal Tac Cmd farewell ceremonies were held at Camp McCauley Wednesday and at Saalfelden and St Johann yesterday. Area Cmd personnel at Linz, Innsbruck, St Johann and Saalfelden will observe the discontinuance of their command today. General Hoy will be the host at a reception in the Roeder Officers Club tonight.

Area Cmd Composition
Area Cmd is composed of the service and administrative units of USFA and was activated two years ago, combining the Salzburg and Linz military posts. Area units provided support for the last two command maneuvers - Exercise "Mudlark" in October, 1953, and "Roundup" in March of this year. Tac Cmd, which contained virtually all of USFA's "combat" units, was informally established in 1950. On January 13, 1951, the command was formally announced. Before Gen Hoy, the Brig Gen James C. Fry and Brig Gen Paul L. Freeman headed the command. Among the many exercises in which the men of Tac Cmd participated were "Alpine," "Rebound," "Snowshoe," "Avalanche," "Frosty," "Mudlark" and "Roundup."
