Another great Web Site by Walter Elkins. I had many tours in Germany. I was with the 81st Trans Co,89th Trans Co, and KTT (Kaiserslautern Truck Terminal) which were companies of the 53d Trans Bn. The 53d was part of the 37th Trans Group. I was with the 53d Trans Bn from 1958/1962. My next asignment to Germany was with the 3d Bn, 68th Armor of the 8th Inf Div, stationed at Sullivan Bks in Manheim 1965/1968. My next duty in Germany was with the Hq's 81st Maint, Bn of the 21st Support Cmd. Again stationed in Mannheim 1970/1973.
I was also in Mannheim, Germany once before, while with the 350th Inf Regt, and was at Tailor Bks during 1955/1956.
Walter Elkin's USFAVA Web Site is worth a visit.

Stationed in Germany three times, 1955-1969. Saw the Stuttgart area recover from the war. Had a great time getting to know the people and as time went on raised a family and exposed them to the German environment. My twenty years with the US Army Aviation was the best times of my life. Wouldn't change anything. Thanks for this opportunity to browse through history.

My duty with the 16th engineers (1982-1984)was the most rewarding of my career. I learned more in 2 years there then I did the remaining 18 years of my career. We had a real world mission, focus and Esprit. I will propably never have that feeling of accomplishment, camraderie, or friendship ever again.

God Bless my fellow soldiers, leaders and friends.

I was with a light weapons infantry unit assigned to the
545th ord. Co. in Munster bei Dieburg--1964-66.
In my off duty hours I would often take my bicycle and travel far into the rolling hills of the rural countryside. I
fell in love with the friendly, open, honest German people and their culture. Once in a while I would stumble upon a fest in some small village. There was nothing quite like hearing three or four hundred voices ringing in song under a tent. It seemed that every German knew fifty songs by heart.
Unfortunately, Germany "lost its song" in the 1970s. A wave of sophistication swept Europe during that time and mass folk singing among the people came to a sad end-God I loved it.
It was due to my long on-duty hours standing alone in God's creation that caused me to think about eternity. On December 18th 1965 I received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and felt the presence of the Holy Spirit.Haven't been
the same since. It boggles the mind when I think that
as a draftee I didn't want to go into the Army in the first place. Yikes!! I'm eternally glad Uncle Sam had his way.

After six months at Benning we were shipped over to Warner Kaserne in Bamberg, Germany. We were assigned to the 3rd Inf. Division. I had a great time and met alot of never to be forgotten buddies. Formerly was Chief Clerk in Message Center in Hq & Hq Det of 102d Signal Battalion stationed at the Bunker in Feudenheim. Tour of duty was Decoration Day (May 30) of 1957 through last week of September, 1958. Have been able to go back to Bunker but unfortunately, the barracks, mess hall and working areas have been torn down and new buildings have been constructed around the Bunker. There is a website of the Bunker and surrounding Feudenheim, contact me and I'll send it to you. Was not able to see in barracks in 1998 as the Bosnian refugee would not permit me to enter my former work area and living quarters. Have established contact with a few members of the Battalion but continue to look for more. Have several photos I can share with anyone who is interested. Did serve first month at Company E, overlooking Heidelberg on Konigstuhl. Visited this area and all seven microwave towers have been torn down. Also have several pictures of this site to share.

Hi to all. Wilkins Barracks, Kornwestheim. 78-81. 300th mp company. I have been fortunate to make several trips to Germany since I left in 1981. The last trip several years ago was quite sad. I, like many of you, have been saddened to go back and find many of the barracks and Kasernes turned over to the civilian population. And not a pretty site in many cases. I enjoy hearing from everyone about their experiences in Germany. I recently made a trip to Ft McClellan, Alabama after a nearly 24yr absence. Any of you MP's that went through the old barracks would be saddened by that sight too. Way too bad. Thanks to all the people and places for the wonderful memories. Mark

Was stationed in Germany on four different occasions, I started with Co C, 709th MP Bn in Aschaffenburg (59-62), this unit was then taken over by the 536th MP Co, 2nd Plt. My second tour was with the 536th MP Co,793rd MP Bn, 15th MP Bde. Munich. I was actually assigned to the Garmisch Recreation Center MP Det from 65-68, this unit was soon taken over by the 463rd MP Co (EG) and the whole unit reforged back to Granite City Army Depot in mid 68. My third tour was at Heilbronn with duty at the 556th MP Co, Siegelsbach, I stayed with this unit from 71-77. Great duty. My fourth and final tour was with the Germersheim General Support Center (80-83), Was the only MP there in charge of depot security. Would enjoy hearing from anyone who was assigned to any of these units.

Former: Sgt,E5, Squad Leader 106MM,R.R.
Served: 1961-1964,Ft. Riley, Kansas
Units: Co.A, 2 Bg. 12Th. Inf. Reg. 1961-1963
Co.E, 1St Bn. 16Th. Inf. Reg. 1963-1964
Both these Units were part of the 1St. Infantry Division"THE BIG RED ONE". During this...Cold War Era..period.
Would greatly appreciate any information about, or responses from
former members of either of these units. The 2/12Th. was disbanded at Ft. Riley, shortly after I left, and then became the 2Bn. 18Th. Inf. Reg.
I have been told that the 1/16Th. went to Vietnam and became the 5/60Th. Inf.

congratulations and thanks for your efforts on what could be a massive undertaking, yet very interesting. I served in 168th Engr Bn ()Cbt) at Nellingen from Jan 60 throug July 60, returned to serve in USAREUR Hqs, Office of the Engineer, from Sep 70 to Oct 75,
then 317th Engr Bn (Cbt) Oct 75- Nov 76, then Hqs V Corps until July 1977 --a total of 10 1/2 years in Germany. May be able to help you with the engineer structure. The non-divisional combat engr bns, of which there were four in VII Corps and three in V Corps, during the 70/s, should not be listedas logistic units, but as combat or combat support under the corps. There were also some special bns that controlled the panel bridge, float bridge, and light equipment companies, some of which were labor service units. There were four engineer construction bns in the 21st Engr Group that was under Engineer Command, (The Corps brigades, 7th and 130th, were not) These const bns were redesignated as engr bns ( combat) (heavy) so that they would not be counted as part of the "logistical tail" part of the infamous and misleading
"tooth to tail ratio" that would not have been such a problem if the metaphor of a boxer had been used instead with a "fist to foot ratio."

I wish you success in developing your site. I was stationed at the Bleidorn Kaserne in Ansbach in 1955-1956. I returned in 1968 while working in Koblenz, Germany and again in 1999 after retirement. I was assigned to the 18th FA Group Headquarters as a Medical Aidman. I have been fortunate to find a buddy who served with me. We have gotten together several time and although we are in our mid sixties, it is like we were 19 years old again. Keep up the good work. James Rippy

I am currently preparing a project to research the history of US Army Aviation in Europe which is in danger of slipping into oblivion.
To realize the project I need your help in the form of stories, information, commented pictures of aircraft, helicopters, people and airfields during your stay in Germany, as scans prints or whatever to make history complete.

I'm looking for a man named Frank Edwin Wright II. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and he was also based in Germany, but I don't know the exact time. If you know him and have any information about him I would be very, very glad!
Thanx in advance!!!

Served in U.S. Army in Germany from January through July, 1963 in 1st Battle Group, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. Joffre Boston, which included 1/28 Infantry, Battery A (105mm), 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 33rd Artillery, and 444th Transportation Battalion (Medium Truck); flew non-stop from Ft. Riley, KS to Rhine-Main & engaged a 7th Army Mech. Inf. Bn. in FTX. Following maneuvers, TF 28 moved to Wildflecken for 3 months intensive field training followed by an ATT in which we earned a "superior" score qualifing the unit for assignment to Berlin, "front line of the Cold War." After approx. 3 months in Berlin, which included providing a Presidential Guard of Honor for President Kennedy (26 JUN 63), Task Force 28 returned to Ft. Riley and the Big Red One.
