Wow it has been 59 years since the May 45 surrender and we're still there. Does anyone remember an Afro American honor guard attached to EUCOM headquarters in Heidleberg. I think that they were called the XXXX infantry company (separate) and at one time the army made a film of their marching techniques. Chrome helmets, fixed bayonets, silent drill, and 160 or so counts to the minute. Saw them in early 1950. For all I know they invented this type of drill. Have tried to research the net but have come up with a blank. P.S. This was before the desegregation that took place in 51 or 52. Any comments?

Stationed HHB, 1st How Bn, 36FA (8" Towed) at Dolan Barracks, Schwaebisch Hall, DBR, 90 or so klicks east of Stuttgart, on Federal Highway 14

Arrived From Ft Sill Geunery school on 09 AUG 60, rotated to Ft Belvoir USMA Prep School on 02 AUG 62. Re-assigned shortly after (I *told* them I didn't want to be an officer!) to A Btry,1st Rocket/How 12FA at Ft Benning.

Would like to find others from Dolan Barracks in that time period. Like to find two guys in particular, Bill Pritchard, who married the SMaj's daughter! and Robert D Armstrong, who went on to SM1 nuke plant school at Ft Belvoir. Particularly fun would be hearing stories from anyone who remembers Fannie's Bar, downtown, across from the jailhouse or Die Schwann, or a third one, forgot the name, upstairs, right across the river from the downtown park. All were wild and rowdy GI bars.

Cheers!

Amazing to see that other old soldiers are out there and can operate these wonderful communications devices. Anyone that was in the 181st Trans Bn, Mannheim, Turley Kaserne circa 1962-1965 would make my day to hear from them. I was in Personnel for the 181 but really assigned to the 51st Trans Company. What a great site! I was with the 5/77th FA at Camp Pieri in Wiesbaden June 1971 - July 1973. I especially enjoyed seeing the aerial photo of Camp Pieri from 1950 which, interestingly enough, is the year of my birth! The place had changed very little when I was there. I was able to pint out to my grandson the window of my room in the barrack, the shop where I worked and the parade ground where we stood formation and lined up vehicles to head off for field problems. What a flood of memories!

Very glad to see a site archiving facts and memories of the US Army and it's communities in Germany. I was a Army dependent "Army Brat" and lived in Germany 1958 to 1961, then 1969 to 1972, and later my father & mother returned for a 3rd tour in the late 1970s. Dad retired from the Army in the early 80's with 32 years of service.

Anyway going up in Germany were the best years of my childhood. I lived in Schwasbish Gmund during the first tour. My brother was born in at the Army Hospital in Bad Cannstatt in 1959.

Then in 1969 we left Fort Gordon GA, and went to McKee Barracks in Crailshiem then later as housing become available moved to Dollan Barracks in Schwabish Hall. About a year after that move we then moved to Hanau and I lived accross from the Hanau Elementary School at Old Argonne Kaserne. Then moved once more out to Fliegerhorst Kaserne.

Dad work in the avonics field and was a shop chief with an avaition unit that supported a OV1 Mohawk unit. The guys who flew the Fulda gap doing their electronic recon thing. So many friends and memories. Europe was a great place as a young teenager. What a great experience!!!

I served with Weapons Platoon, A Co., 3rd BN/28th Infantry (Black Lions!) from June 1977 to February 1980 and was stationed at the Wiesbaden Army Airfield in Wiesbaden, Germany. We were a Mechanized Infantry outfit and were originally from Fort Riley, Kansas, so we wore a Big Red One patch on our shoulders for most of the time I was there. However, I went home in '80 with a Fourth Division patch. I spent my time in an 81 mm mortar section as the HQ squad driver & RTO, but I filled in doing everything from ammo bearer to base gun gunner. We spent a lot of time out in the field. Baumholder, Hornzfeld, Wildflicken and others (guessed on the spelling, by the way). Did the big ones, too, like Reforger.

I thought I hated being stationed so far away from home back then, but I find that I do look back on those days, nearly 25 years ago, pretty fondly. And I had a lot of friends that one day up and left, never to be heard from again. I'd sure like to hear from some of them. Or from anybody stationed out there in Wiesbaden during my days there.
