I first was station in Germany in 1960 at O'Brien Barracks in Schwabach, I was with the Btry C,3rd Gun 80th (later became 39th) Arty. I was there until 1962. For a brief time I was sent to Darmstadt in Ludwig Kaserne .They were over strength, so I was assigned to Company B, 95th QM Bn in Wurzburg. I lived on Leighton Barracks and worked in Faulenberg Kaserne until 1965.
I returned to Germany in 1973 until 1977 at Bad Kreuznach with the 8th Inf Div at Rose Barracks.
Enjoyed Germany except the field duty.
Train travel, food ,beer, people all were good to me.

'Was with the 70th Engineer Battalion (A Company) in USFA Saalfelden and Salzburg, Austria in 1954-Fall '55. The Battalion then moved up to Nellingen Kaserne, Germany (Near Stuttgart) where it remained until Gyroscoping to Ft. Campbell, KY in March 1957.

I am upgrading the 70th Engineer's history and linage in detail from its beginning on 01 Oct 1935 to Present. Does anyone have any information at all on the 145th Engineer Combat Battalion WWII (ETO) 1944-1945?

I lived in three locations in Germany in the 60's. My father was a civil servant working for the Army. From 1962 to 1964 I lived in Munich in a housing area of row houses next to the Isar river known as Bogenhausen. This was, by far, the nicest housing area we lived in ... almost as spacious as housing in the States. I remember sledding on the nearby hill and biking through the Englischer Garten ... which we got to by crossing a dam over the Isar. I went to elementary school in a building in a bombed-out area known as Alabama Kaserne.

From 1964 to 1966 I lived in Ludwigsburg, just north of Stuttgart. I went to junior high school in Stuttgart followed by high school in Pattonville (Ludwigsburg HS). Ludwigsburg was almost as magical as Munich ... with parks and a huge castle.

In 1967 I lived in Heidelberg and went to Heidelberg HS.

During those five years living in Germany, my family traveled extensively throughout Europe ... including Garmisch, Bertchesgaden, Italy (Lake Garda, Verona, Venice, and points south), and Spain ... and we generally camped during those trips since my family was on a tight budget.

I was in the Boy Scouts, eventually attaining the rank of Eagle. I was never an American Boy Scout in the United States ... only in Germany. We went to Camp Freedom in northern Germany, every summer. We also traveled to Denmark, Vienna, and a Boy Scout lodge located in the foothills of the Alps in Garmisch.

After that, my Dad was transferred to the Pentagon, and we moved to the heat and humidity of Northern Virginia. I never returned until I took my family back four years ago. I now live in Southern California.

Yes-I see that those of us who served in usacomzeur are not even mentioned in here. I was stationed with the 256th Sig Co in Verdun, France from 1963 to 1966. I don't see a listing for usacomzeur as a major subordinate command for usareur. When I arrived in Verdun in 08/63 we wore the usareur patch, and then later changed to the comz patch. Why is there no mention of the soldiers serving in comz? There were many of us.

Thank you, Hans, for your comments and support. Although we face some very difficult times ahead in the relationship of the two countries (US and Germany) as a result of the divergent political views on whether the "security of the world requires disarming Saddam Hussein now," or not, German-American relations will overcome even these challenges, as they have others in the past three hundred years.

Was delighted to find a website for my old unit the 7774th Sig Bn, Hammond Barracks, in Seckenheim. This was one of the finest Signal Units I have ever been in. When you buy your own tailor made uniforms, starch you inspection underwear, shine the bottoms of your shoes, and brasso the fuel lines in our vehicles, that should tell one something. esprit de corps was outstanding...I learned my profession from the finest officers and non-commissioned officers. I often wonder what happened to my barracks mates.Iwas stationed in Hammond barracks from January 1949 until November 1952, when I volunteered to go to Korea.

I came to Germany with the 334 C/R Co in Nov 52. The only Canteen Repair Company in USAREUR. Ha ha. We started out in Mannheim/kfertal and were in several locations and changed designations to 339 C/R Co and then 339 ASA Co before i left Germany from Kssel-Rotwesten in Nov 56.
I went to Italy in May 64 to the 560 Sig Bn at Vicenza. I left the 560th in Apr 66.
I Returned to Germany in NOv 69 to USAREUR in Heidelberg. Our part went to Worms in May 75 and from there i left Germany in Jun 75.
You have a great site here. Brings back a lot of old memories.

Spent time in Strassburg Kaserne, and Nahbollenbach Gen Depot, '63 - '65.

I was a "Combat Engineer" by MOS, temporarily assigned to the 522nd QM Co. and drove forklifts, from 2000 lb capacity to 10,000 lb capacity, to assist in the operation of the depot.

Talk about job differences! I was originally trained in explosives handling, bridge building, and heavy equipment.
Oh well, that's the Army for ya!

Well, I guess a 5 ton forklift qualifies as "heavy equipment" ! heh heh!

Gettin Hammered at the Herzo Bierfest, the professor putting up a fest flag on a Communications antenna right under the MP's noses, Stompin on Smadges flowers, shootin machine guns in Erlangen and Hohenfels, makin sure that women and children got the M-16s before the ASA got them! goin on field problems with a couple of jugs of vodka ( I hid them under a small tree so that they would not get found during "Booze Raids" by the CO )see ya Bob Hostetler. I am looking for archival data from 1945-1949 of Golz Kaserne in Mainz-Kastel. My parents were Ukrainian refugees in that camp and I spent the first year of my life there. Two of the buildings that were there in 1945 are still standing (79a and 79b Wiesbadener Strasse). They were converted to apartments and now house American forces personnel. Can anyone suggest where I might look up more information about the camp? It and the American soldiers who administered the camp have had a great influence on our lives. As well, Eleanor Roosevelt visited the site and went from room to room with an interpreter to tell refugees they did not have to return to the Soviet Union if they did not wish to do so. I am looking for any references from that time.

Hi:
I was stationed at McNair Barracks, Berlin Germany 1962-1964, as a member of the Commo Platoon HHC 3/6 - We were located on the 2nd floor. It was great Duty and it allowed me to work with some really great people. I made 4-Trips to Wildflecken and participated in many, many parades. It was nice marching down the streets of Berlin, as the German people really appreciated these parades. Naturally, it was nice to rotate and get back to the States, but a big part of me is still there. I've been saying since 1964 when I left, I'll get back here some day... Well, some day I will...

The veterans and families of the 143rd Signal Battalion, 3AD, invite you to learn our history and share our memories.

The 143rd Signal Battalion was tasked to provide Encrypted Voice and Data communications to the combat and support elements of the 3rd Armor Division, Spearhead.

From WWII to the Persian Gulf War, the Voice of Iron ensured that not only did unit commanders have contact with their battlefield elements; the unit also provided morale boosting contact with families in Europe and Stateside.

In 1963 I was a grad from Ft Monmouth NY MOS 345.1. I was flown to Frankfurt and awaited more security clearance. Then was sent by train to Pirmasens where I was a CRYPTO TECH for 25 month plus. I then came back to the states in June of 1965..I want to visit my Husterhoeh Kaserne again. I am will try to make this a vacation in early part of next year. My military # RA 18648904

I served with the 24th supply and service company at Pendleton Barracks in Giessen.FRG in 79 to 82 as the unit's armorer. had a great time in Germany. good food, great beer and beautiful frauliens, but bad weather. what happened to the 24th? do anybody know? love to hear from anybody that was at pendleton barracks during that time. Great website.

Outstanding web site. Was stationed at Rhein-Main AB 78-80 glad you are keeping history of USFET and many other USAREUR histories.

Adding areas in Frankfurt and Heidelberg where military personnel lived in housing areas and pictures of where things were yesterday and today would be of interest.

Thanks for your fantastic work.
