Great Website. I was in Germany form 75-77. I was working for ITT. We put in Color TV all over Germany. I came back in 79 to maintain the system at the AMSF-EUR, in Mannheim. From there, I went to work on engineering/installing/testing communications for the Positive Control and Custody of US Nuclear Weapons in Europe. First was the E-ECCCS, Enhanced-European Command Control Console System, then to Straight Talk Net (STN) and Cemetery Net then to the Flaming Arrow Net-Europe (FAN-E), then to Regency Net (RN). Then, the end of cold war! I worked at HQUSEUCOM J-6 in Stuttgart for 16 years. Great job, great country. I am sure I missed visiting a Kaserne or outpost during that time, but so far all that I have seen in print, been there done that! 18 years in Germany, loved it.

Thanks for this informative site. This morning I was reading the posting by Earl Gates concerning Einsiedlerhof Med. Depot and I recalled that my brother-in-law, John "Jackie" Love was stationed there at approximately the same time. I never could pin him down on an exact time. Jackie was a cook E-4 or E-5. Would like to know if anyone remembers him.

This is a nice site. My father was stationed in Flensburg, Germany 1987-1991. I got on the internet trying to find pictures of Flensburg to jog my member of the city-I dream of going back there one day to see just how much has changed since we lived there. Although many of the pictures I looked at are before the time we were there, seeing the name of his artillery group was exciting!

From viewing the pictures on this site of Site 59 it brings back allot of memories Mostly Good. At the same time it was a very isolated location with what I now know was very very dangerous weapons of mass destruction. This site is great. Keep up the good work!

I am amazed at the amount and accuracy of the information you have put together here. You have pulled names out of my memory from 44 years ago. Truly a fine job. Wish I had known you back then. I was 9th Engr Bn Cbt, then HHC, 540th Engr Gp. as Redeployment Clerk serving under CWO Earl W. Hoffman who hailed from Colorado Springs, CO. He mustered out a week before I did and when I arrived Ft. Dix, he looked me up, took care of the paperwork and gave me a ride to the Phil. airport on Holloween night, 1967. I was also his driver and occasionaly filled in as driver for CSMAJ Santacroce. Now, here's a question for all that were in Ludendorff - What was the name of the little gasthause straight out the gate and on the left side of the road about 1/4 mile or so down? The owner, his wife and their 17 y/o daughter were favorites of a lot of us from the Kaserne. They liked their GI guests and treated us well.

She needed to marry a man of Malsch, became ill and has died many years ago. The only name that I know, is the name of the dog of the american oficers family: it was Rusty.

I am searching for my half brother. My
father
John H. Getchell was stationed in Karlsruhe
1960 -1963. My father was in the 7 Army 25th
Signal Bn in Gerszewski Barracks. He had a
picture of a young german woman with a
little
boy. My mother told me many years ago about
this Brother. My mother saw the picture of
the german woman and the child, but it´s
lost. My mother told me that the boy was
about 2 years old when John H Getchell left
Germany. So my brother must be born about
1962 or 1963 in or around Karlsruhe.
My father spoke almost perfect German
because
he was of german ancestry.

If anyone has any info, I would welcome any
assistance. Thank you.

Cecilia Getchell

I viewed the information about Jaeger Kaserne in Aschaffenburg. I was stationed there from 1961-1963 in building 26. The photo showing the snack bar is mislabeled. That building on the left (25) is the USO club, the snack bar is building 5 at the top right of the photo. I was in the 7th Trans Co. and building 19 was our mess hall. I can ID some of the other buildings if you need that info. Great website, thanks John

Many GI-childrens in Germany are trying to locate their biological american fathers. Do you have any comments?
The first heading on the search engine gave the 24th USAFAD, at Neue Kaserne in Landsberg am Lech and stated that they moved into their own building in June of 1959. That's incorrect information. I was a soldier in the original 24th USA Missil Det. It was formed with eighteen enlisted men and two officers and we went through the nuc. training program as a unit at Fort Sill, then shipped out as a self contained unit for our assignment to the 82nd Arty. Bn., of the 1st Mountain Div. of the Bundeswehr at Neue Kaserne in Landsberg, Germany. We arrived in August of 1961, and were the first occupants of the new building that was constructed to billet us as the guest NATO unit. The entire base looked very new, so perhaps it was completed in 1959 and the Bundeswehr moved in in June of that year. But I can stated with absolute certainty that the 24th USA Missil Det. did not arrive at the Kaserne until Aug., 1961.

Last week I took a Space Available flight back to Germany. I visited Bad Kreuznach where I was stationed 55 years ago. My kaserne (Des Gottes) is gone and Rose Barracks is closed. All US military is gone from BK. Walter Von Hoff, the dealer where I bought my new 1955 VW for $945 has changed names.

However, one of my favorite night clubs, the Capri Bar is still there. I went by it accidentally.

An era gone by, but I am glad I got a chance to go back once again

Regarding mystery photo #7 (the antennae above the IG Farben (Abrams) building) I can only tell you that it was still there when I left Frankfurt in Dec 94. The base was not locked and anyone could climb up to the crow's nest at the top - just for the record, it looked to shaky for me to try it.

I was stationed in Giessen, Germany in 1946-1948 and assigned to Hq & Hq Co 56th QMBD/European Quartermaster Depot. As I recall one of the Company Commanders was Capt Paul Harrington. 1st/Sgt was Madden, Mess Sgts was S/Sgt Horst and later replaced by S/Sgt Fitzgibbons. Cooks were Cpl Nichols, Cpl Stevenson and Pvt McKay. Cpl Roberts was supply clerk. Also assigned to the company, as I remember, was Alvin Wheeler, V.A. Spencer, Cpl Abbey, Stottler, Perkins, Angle, Landreth, Richard Gillette and Harold Wicker. I believe Col Skinner was Depot Commander. The city of Giessen at that time was pretty much devestated. Loved the people and city of Giessen and returned for visit in 1962.

I have spent hours reading your website. absolutely fantastic! I was stationed in Bavaria for many years, but, was afforded a 3 year stay in Berchtesgaden/Chiemsee for my last 3 years. I absolutely Loved my stay and feel very broken hearted about the changes made to the area. I am particularly disheartead about the tearing down of the "Hotel General Walker" My children are grown enough to make another trip to Bavaria with me, but I am disenchanted by the lack of real estate I once visited. So much beauty and history is lost and our children will never see the once in a lifetime architecture those buildings and Kasserns represented. I am very saddened and always wanted to share this history with them. I spent 4-5 days a week exploring the countryside of Berchtesgaden. I explored miles of sealed bunkers and barracks that were boobytrapped since the 1940's. Ive seen 2000 lb bombs pulled from the golf course, 20 meters deep. Ive been in the Eagles nest, alone with nothing but a flashlight, many nights in a row, exploring until the wee hours of the morning. Is but a shame, almost all is lost.
I do thank you for the fond memories...you bring back many thoughts of joy and hope.
I can probably help you with a few of those unknown photos posted with regard to the area. E-mail me any photos or questions. I DO recognize quite a few of them through the overgrown grasses.
again, I thank you and keep up the great work! Ive loved every page!
