Here is a photo of President Kennedy's visit to Berlin in 1963.  It was taken at Checkpoint Charlie with me and my boss in the foreground.

Soviet detention of our military convoy at Checkpoint Bravo.  After being detained for one day at Checkpoint Alpha, the convoy was allowed to proceed, but upon arrival at Checkpoint Bravo it was again held up.  To retaliate we dispatched another convoy form Berlin to Helmstedt, thus blocking all civilian and military traffic from and to Berlin.  After 72 hours of detention, the convoys were allowed to proceed.  The crisis resulted to dismounting procedures, which the Soviets wanted changed.
