Bernd Glanz, a German author who specializes in US Army Europe topics, is doing research on camouflage patterns used by the US Army in Germany during the Cold War for a future issue of Tankograd. (Check the Bibliography Page for mention of some earlier issues of the Tankograd publications (No. 12-17).)

Bernd's primary concern right now is to gather information and photos on two patterns used in the 1970s: MASSTER and Dual-Tex.

MASSTER (Modern Army Selected Systems Test, Evaluation and Review) was a project initially established at Fort Hood, TX in the late 1960s to provide operational test and evaluation of new battlefield intelligence gathering equipment for the Vietnam war. In 1970, the project became a permanent organization and its mission expanded to include test and evaluation of new tactical concepts such as the TRICAP Division and ACCB (Air Cavalry Combat Brigade).

In 1972, the activity started to run evaluations on camouflage, involving pattern painting of vehicles and aircraft. MASSTER took a leading role in developing innovative camouflage techniques.

Bernd is looking for B/W and color photos of US Army vehicles (wheeled or tracked) that show the application of MASSTER or Dual-Tex camo patterns. He is also interested in corresponding with anyone who has first hand knowledge of camouflage colors and pattern painting as applied in USAREUR/7th ARMY during the Cold War.

Of special interest would be a copy of USAREUR Reg 525-5 or any related regulation at corps or division level from the era.

If you want to contact Bernd, please
contact me -- I will forward all emails to Bernd or provide you his email address so you can contact him directly.
