If you have any details on which units used the hangars or other facilities at Nellingen during the 1950s-1980s, please contact me. (Actually, if you have ANY details on the organization and operation of the Army airfield at Nellingen Kaserne during the Occupation or Cold War eras, please give me a shout!)

For example, in the 1980s, the 394th Trans Battalion (AVIM) used the hangars identified as (1 - 3) and (5).

I would like to compile a list of the hangars and their using units through that period.

RESPONSES:
(Please contact the webmaster if you have any details on the hangars at Nellingen for other time frames besides the early 1980s)

HANGAR USE INFORMATION FOR EARLY 1980s

(Hampton Flanagan, UH Platoon, B Co, 394th Trans Bn (AVIM))
One thing I do know is that the whole flight line area was run by the 394th Trans Bn.

Small building identified as
(A) was the A Company flight shack.

Hangar (1) was UH Platoon, B Company, 394
th. The hangar was used to do phases on Huey’s and at the time I was there, they just started integrating Blackhawks. Our hangar also included the Platoon sergeants office, T.I. office, battery shop, sheet metal shop, tool room and platoon leaders office ( Lt. or Warrant Officer). The tower attached to Hangar (1) was never used for anything other than storage while I was there.

OH/AH
Platoon (B Co) – They repaired Cobras and OH-58’s. I remember the OH/AH platoon being in hangar (4). I talked to a buddy of mine who was in AH (Cobra) Platoon and he said he thinks they were in the hangar (2) next to ours (1). (4) could have been engine shop. Don’t remember.

(William Haynes, OH-AH Platonn, B Co, 394th Trans Bn (AVIM))
I was stationed here during this period from 1979 to 1982 with B Co 394th I was in the OH-AH platoon during my stay here.

Your picture (Flight line #1) doesn't show the whole flight line, for there was another hangar to the left of what you show as hangar #1. (Webmaster note: Flight line #2 was added and shows that hangar as #5.)

That hanger (#5) possessed the paint, hydrolics, and sheet metal shops.

Hangar #1 was the UH hangar, just UH-1 until the arrival of the first 2 UH-60s that came to Germany in late 1981 early 1982.

Hangar #2 was the OH-AH-Armament Platoon.

Hangar #3 was warehousing and over flow space.

Bldg. A was the flight shack.

And hangar #4 was not used except for warehouse space, POV inspections and a section in the back were you could sign out a space/stall to work on your car.

Avionics section was in another bldg that would have also been in the area not pictured at the lower left of your picture.

I was assigned to OH-AH platoon first as a Helicopter Missile Systems Repair Specialist and then cross trained over to OH-58 mechanic.
